Informative and Entertaining, November 20, 2009
I got these two books recently, as I'm restoring some old handplanes, I've always enjoyed Garrett's writing in Fine Woodworking, his articles on hand tools have inspired me to expand my own use of hand tools.
The books are top quality in their construction, paper and printing, no surprise there, Taunton Press always puts out good books. The layout of the books makes sense, and the staging of the tools, with all the right artifacts and the photography almost make this a "Coffee Table Book", it is that nice. Be careful not to drool on the pages when you get a look at some of the amazing tool pictured. Garrett was able to explore and photograph some very nice tools from some very extensive collections for these books.
I've read both books cover to cover, but they both will get a lot more careful study, as the information in them is copious, and I cannot absorb it all in one sitting. These books will live in my workshop, where they will be easily on hand to inspire and enjoy.
Cheers!
A great work, though I admit I wanted a little more out of it., October 24, 2009
I don't want my cons to detract from this work. Its very comprehensive, and I probably need to reread some parts again.
While I only gave it 4 stars, it is a must buy for hand tool users. This is the most comprehensive work I've read so far. Coupled with the stunning photographs any hand tool enthusiast must own this set.
That said I thought I would get a little more "how to use" on some of the less common items. While maybe I'm over thinking some of the tools I really wanted a bit more in depth writing on using a spoke shave and a few other items that I don't know that much about.
If this book goes up for revision thats my only hint for improvement. A bit more user knowledge to get a kick in the right direction.
Again, this is a must buy.
Inspirational , November 16, 2008
I recently met Garrett Hack while taking a two day private lessson from him and having been to his home, seeing his workshop and using some of his tools, it was truly inspirational. I bought this book set after the trip and have learned soo much. Many of the things he teaches in the Handplane book not only teach you what is needed to understand and master the handplane, but also helps you understand how to be a better woodworker and craftsman. Also, these books are loaded with excellent pictures and illustrations of tools and woodworking techniques. I highly recommend buying this book set as you will be motivated and enabled to use your tools and produce better end products.
great introduction, June 8, 2007
For the woodworker looking to expand his/her knowledge of planes, how they work, the history, good planes vs bad, how to tune and restore them, this is the book. Lots of illustrations, well written...would highly recommend
