Good book for beginning DIYer., October 19, 2008
I initially checked this book out of the library, but liked it enough to order it. The book was a great source for steps, photos and explanations of doing makeovers in your home. The table of contents includes the projects addressed and includes prep work, tools required, terminology and my favorite sections were the ones that told what could go wrong. There are other square boxes scattered throughout that have tips and "Do It Right" comments. Not sure why the other reviewer was so negative, but I do watch pretty much most of the HGTV and DIY decorating shows and know this book would be helpful even IF you do watch the shows. The issue with the shows is they may briefly demonstrate how to do something, but there are no detailed instructions, nothing about all the equipment used and may only include one or no tips.
As an example, on page 76, there is info on casing out a doorway to dress up the transition entry between rooms instead of having plain drywall. There is a list of tools you'll need and what to buy, illustration of the different components that make up the casing for the doorway and photographs that show how to prepare the jamb, leveling, shimming, etc. They don't go over that kind of detail on decorating shows.
I would definitely recommend this book if you are looking for a book that helps with the specifics on doing home improvement projects inside and outside (garage, workshop) your home.
52 Weekend Makeovers: Easy Projects to Transform Your Home Inside and Out (Taunton Home) , October 1, 2007
Not much new in here, I should have checked the copy out at the library. If you watch the Home Imporvement shows on TV, there is nothing new, and certainly nothing interesting in this book. I wish I could remember where I read a recommendation for this book so I could write them a nasty letter.
